Luckily, the stretcher was only precautionary in this instance. Furthermore, it was not required at all. About halfway through the game between the Islanders and Sabres tonight, Reilly was hit by Sabre forward Jordan Greenway. It was a fairly run-of-the-mill kind of play as the two players were along the boards. Unfortunately though, Reilly got the worst of it as he ended up falling and hitting his head on the ice resulting in him lying motionless for several seconds.
It is obvious how serious this situation was through a couple of important facts. First, both teams sent their training staff onto the ice to help him. Typically, this only happens when there are very serious and dangerous injuries. Second, the in-arena medical staff brought out the stretcher for him, anticipating that he was going to be taken to a local hospital right away.
However, things may not have been as bad as they at first appeared. After a long pause in play, the trainers agreed that Reilly was well enough to go back to the locker room and did not need the stretcher. As such, they helped him get back on his feet and guided him to the bench, helping him skate over slowly.
We are expecting an update on Reilly status from the Islanders later this evening. Be sure to stay tuned for more updates on this evolving story.
