This season has been a surprising one for the Calgary Flames, and for the most part, they've stayed in the Stanley Cup Playoffs race in the Western Conference despite major struggles on their blue line.
They've tried many things to fix this, and in recent times that has been veteran Tyson Barrie, and although he's shown flashes of being a great offensive minded defenseman once again, he simply doesn't have it at this point in his career.
Now, after the team recalled two young players from the AHL on Wednesday, the team have followed it up with the move to waive Barrie, according to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff.
The 33-year old got into just 13 games with the Flames this season, and although he had one goal and 3 points in that time, his -7 differential shows just how little of an impact he makes on the ice, as this move was a long time coming for Flames fans.
Even after this move, the Flames have a crowded blue line, with Kevin Bahl, Rasmus Andersson and MacKenzie Weegar leading the way, and with other veterans taking up space, Barrie eventually just became the odd man out.
While he struggled in the Flames system, there could be a fit out there in the NHL for Barrie, who could be a solid piece on a bottom pairing with the right partner, but as for the player Barrie once was years ago, he simply doesn't have it anymore, with the very realistic possibility that he passes through waivers and heads back to the AHL in Calgary.
