It didn't look good from the video, and we now have official word that it wasn't. The Tampa Bay Lightning have released an official update on defenceman Mikhail Sergachev after he was stretchered off the ice in last night's game against the New York Rangers.
According to the team, Sergachev underwent surgery today after breaking both bones in his lower leg.
"Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Mikhail Sergachev underwent successful surgery today in New York to stabilize fractures to both the tibia and fibula in his left leg, the team has announced. Sergachev is expected to return to Tampa in the coming days to immediately begin rehabilitation. A timetable for his return to the ice has not yet been established."
With this type of surgery, it usually takes 10 to 12 weeks before it's recommended that you let your leg bear the full weight of your body again. While there's no official word yet, the prospects of Sergachev returning in the regular season are low, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's done until the 2024-25 season.
