It certainly didn't look good in the video, and we now have word that it was bad. An update on Blake Wheeler of the New York Rangers after getting injured last night has him being placed on long-term injured reserve.
According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, Wheeler is out for the rest of 2023-24, and likely won't return for the playoffs, although that hasn't been completely ruled out yet and will likely depend on how far the team goes in the postseason.
"Unfortunately, Blake Wheeler out for rest of the regular season. A postseason return is considered unlikely, although not 100 per cent ruled out depending on how far NYR go."
While the Rangers haven't said exactly what Wheeler's injury is, it sure looks like a broken leg from the video. The 37-year-old went down awkwardly near the boards and got one of his legs caught underneath him.
Wheeler's veteran presence will certainly be missed by the New York Rangers, who are currently first in the Metropolitan Division, and one point out of first place in the Eastern Conference. It's also possible Wheeler has played his last game with the team, as he becomes a free agent at the end of this season.
