Potentially frustrated by the team's lack of success, Gibson has now informed the Ducks he would waive his contractual no-trade clause to be dealt to another team. Sportsnet's Nick Alberga broke the news today.
Gibson, still only 28 years old, is somewhat riding on the coattails of success early in his career. Once a highly touted prospect, he entered the league quickly and lived up to the expectations, posting a save percentage over .920 in his first three full seasons. However, his personal stats have taken a turn downward in the last three seasons, never once posting a save percentage over .905.
With that said, only being 28-years-old and with previous display of superstar ability, Gibson holds incredible value as a trade piece and as an asset to contending teams in search of a goaltender. With a relatively weak market this year for free-agent goalies, Gibson may be a coveted asset for some General Managers. Yet with 6 years left on his $6.4M contract and his recent struggles, it may be perceived as a bit of a gamble.
Contending teams in search of a goaltender would include the Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers, and Toronto Maple Leafs. It's likely that if the Ducks pull the trigger on a Gibson trade, they would be looking for future assets to contend within their window with their younger players like Zegras, Drysdale, and McTavish. The team would be seeking high draft picks, high-end prospects, and young roster players in return.
