Auston Matthews signs a new contract with a major sponsor, likely signals he'll remain a Maple Leaf
For the last year NHL Insiders have been trying to get a read on whether or not Auston Matthews intends to remain a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs. With multiple different insiders reporting different things, it's difficult to get a read on the full situation. But today it was announced that Matthews has signed a new sponsorship deal with a major Canadian company.
The Royal Bank of Canada made it official that I have signed Auston Matthews as a brand ambassador.
This partnership is something that likely shows Matthews willingness to remain in Canada. While many have wondered if Matthews will remain a Maple Leaf, it's difficult to imagine that he'd receive these sort of lucrative partnerships in other markets.
Matthews is eligible to sign an extension with the Maple Leafs on July 1st of 2023. That is the day that Auston's no movement clause also kicks in. While Leafs' fans will still worry until that deal is signed, deals like this should show Matthews' willingness to remain a member of the Leafs.
