Benches clear in game where teams combined for 554 penalty minutes
Fighting in hockey ha decreased over the years, but that didn't stop two women's teams over the weekend from getting physical. During a Division 3 Women's World Championship game tempers flared leading to over 550 penalty minutes.
In the final 4th place game, host Romania faced off against Bulgaria. With the score sitting 3-2 in favor of Romania, they burst out for a 7 goal 3rd period. This gave the host team a 10-2 lead, which didn't sit well.
Bulgaria didn't take the loss well and and tempers escalated. According to Hockey Worldwide, 19 players received ejections.
19 players were given 25 minute penalties while Romania also was assessed a 20 minute penalty for abuse of officials. Of course with the tournament being over it means nothing, but we'll see if the IIHF assesses suspensions for further tournaments.
At the end of the day it's just exciting to see teams showing off this sort of passion.
