Brad Treliving makes surprising comment on how much Auston Matthews could have asked for
Earlier this week the Toronto Maple Leafs and Auston Matthews announced that the center and team had reached an agreement on a new deal. The new contract saw Matthews add additional 4-years to his contract at a $13,250,000 cap hit. This makes Matthews the highest paid player in NHL history.
The reaction of Maple Leafs' fans was mixed on this deal, but ultimately it keeps Auston Matthews in Toronto until he's at least 31. Today the Maple Leafs held their media availability to discuss the deal.
During the availability Brad Treliving was asked about the negotiations and how he felt about how things transpired.
You're talking about one of the world's best talents. And in the situation he was in, he could come in and demand a whole lot more than what he got. And that's just the reality.... To me, it was a partnership more than it was a negotiation.
According to Treliving, Matthews has the ability to demand a lot more money. However, it's hard to believe that you be the case. While the cap hit of the deal is definitely palatable with the cap increasing, it's difficult to believe that another team would be willing to pay this without full term.
Unfortunately for the Maple Leafs and Brad Treliving, the culture that was created in Toronto by Kyle Dubas will be extremely difficult to break.
