When Brad Treliving took over as General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs he made it clear he wanted to make the team tougher to play against. Treliving mentioned the need to get tougher in front of their own net. By doing so the Leafs could provide additional help to their goaltenders.

This comment was music to Leafs' fans ears. After seeing their goalies get injured on multiple occasions, fans wanted to see some grit and toughness. However, today Brad Treliving went out and signed the exact opposite.

John Klingberg is joining the #leafs on a one-year contract worth $4.15M.

While Klingberg adds an offensive element to the Leafs right side he doesn't help them on the defensive side of the puck. Klingberg over his career has started over 60% of his shifts in the offensive zone. With Morgan Rielly also in Toronto, that also will limit Klingberg's powerplay time.

While many expected a big offseason from the Leafs, the start of this summer has been anything but impressive.
