Breaking News - Detroit Red Wings place former 1st round pick on waivers
Steve Yzerman is a very direct and meticulous General Manager. He doesn't make any decision lightly that's why it's so surprising that today Yzerman placed 27-year-old Jakub Vrana on waivers.

Jakub Vrana recently went through the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program.
His contract carries a $5.25M AAV through next season.

Earlier this year Vrana checked himself into the Players Assistance program, but had recently returned to the Red Wings. This season Vrana has only played in two games, scoring a goal and an assist. Vrana was drafted 14th overall in the 2014 NHL Draft.
Vrana was one of the key pieces in the trade that sent Anthony Mantha to the Washington Capitals. In 323 career games, Vrana has 91 goals and 98 assists. Given the salary cap, it would be hard to believe that he will be claimed, but he could definitely make almost all teams in the league better.
