Moments ago, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman broke the news that the Colorado Avalanche have acquired centre Lars Eller from the Washington Capitals.
At the time, the return for Washington is unknown, but as a 33 year old pending free agent, it's not likely to be more than a mid-round pick or an average prospect.
Eller has had previous playoff heroics and a Stanley Cup win in his time in Washington, which will provide the Avalanche with a veteran centre depth option as they look to make another long playoff run.
Eller is in the final year of a contract that pays him $3.5M, and it's likely that Washington retained money to make this deal work. Eller has struggled offensively this season, only scoring 7 goals and 16 points in 60 games.
On the other hand, Washington is continuing what has become a very aggressive retool, and one the club hopes can work very quickly. Despite Washington selling at this deadline, look for them to add aggressively this offseason, as they'll look to make the playoffs every year Ovechkin remains on the team.
