We all probably have moments in our lives where we have said something we wish we could take back. For Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche, this is likely one of those times.
While it just seems to have started circulating in online discussions today, Cale Makar, a bonafide superstar in the NHL, did an interview with the Denver Post around five days ago where he was asked about the five players charged in the investigation into an incident allegedly involving members of Team Canada's World Junior Champions from 2018. Makar was on the squad, but has never been implicated by police in any investigation. Makar's choice of words when answering the question has some people upset.
"It's tough. I've been told not to comment on that ongoing investigation. I've been straightforward from the start. I wasn't there," Makar said
"It was a very fortunate bounce to not obviously be a part of something like that. I'm just going to leave it to the people who are handling the work right now. I can't stress enough that I wasn't part of that." - Cale Makar, DenverPost.com Maybe it was just the hockey player in him coming out, but "fortunate bounce" was not the best choice of words to use when talking about not being implicated in an investigation like this one.
"We're talking about Cale Makar's response to the ongoing Team Canada investigation, and his insensitive comments.
#GoAvsGo"
I would certainly like to believe that Makar didn't mean for those words to sound they way they do, and he does have plenty of defenders online as well.
"Anyone mad at that Cale Makar quote flat out doesn't understand what sport this is and what hockey players are actually like."
"I hope Cale Makar goes out there tonight and scores a ton of points just to piss off the perpetually offended even more.
Makar and all other members of Team Canada from the 2018 World Juniors are currently prohibited from participating in any Hockey Canada sanctioned events, until the organization decides otherwise. That includes the 2026 Winter Olympics.
