It caused a massive stir on social media when it first happened. Now, Carson Briere, the son of former NHLer and current Philadelphia Flyers Gm Danny Briere, has been sentenced for pushing an empty wheelchair down a flight of stair and breaking it during a party.

While in court this week, the owner of the wheelchair, Sydney Benes, talked about how she was impacted by the incident that happened at a pub back in March.

"Sydney Benes, who lost her legs in an automobile accident in 2021, talked in an Erie courtroom on Tuesday about the embarrassment she had to deal with in March when she was carried downstairs to use the bathroom at Sullivan's Pub & Eatery.

Then there was the humiliation of finding her wheelchair, which had been pushed from the top of the stairs, sitting damaged at the bottom of those stairs, she said." - Erie Times-News

Briere and a fellow athlete Patrick Carrozzi both received 15 month suspended sentences on a second-degree misdemeanor count of criminal mischief. If they successfully complete the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition (ARD) program, both will have their charges dismissed and their records expunged.

"They will each receive 15 months of probation and their charges of second-degree misdemeanor criminal mischief will be dismissed and expunged upon successfully completing the program." - New York Times

Briere apologized profusely for the incident after it happened, claiming it was out of character for him. Funds were also provided to pay for a new wheelchair.
