Colorado Avalanche announce Joe Sakic is no longer the General Manager
The Colorado Avalanche just won the Stanley Cup and it was announced at the NHL Draft that Joe Sakic had won the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award. But it turns out, Sakic won't be repeating next season, because he's no longer the teams General Manager.
In a surprising turn of events the Avalanche have announced they've promoted Chris MacFarland to General Manager, replacing Sakic.
COL will be promoting Chris MacFarland to GM, with Joe Sakic becoming President of Hockey Operations. The Avalanche wisely chose to keep MacFarland rather than allow him to interview with other teams earlier this season.
The Avalanche had previously refused to allow MacFarland to interview for vacant GM positions in hopes of keeping him in the organization. While this is a surprising change of management it does appear the Avalanche got most of their off-season needs filled with Sakic at the helm over the draft.
Sakic's promotion will also allow him to remain a member of the organization in a larger capacity.
