Department of Player Safety announces lengthy suspension for Brendan Gallagher

After Brendan Gallagher got kicked out of a game against the New York Islanders for a hit on Adam Pelech, the Department of Player Safety hands down the punishment.

Last night when the New York Islanders faced off the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal forward Brendan Gallagher got kicked out of the game for a rather dangerous elbow on Islanders defender Adam Pelech.

Earlier today, the NHL's Department of Player Safety announced Gallagher would have a hearing for the hit. Now Gallagher's punishment is known; take a look.

Gallagher will forfeit nearly $170,000 in salary.

Gallagher has been suspended for the maximum 5 games for a phone hearing and will have to forgo a significant amount of his salary as a result of an illegal check to the head.

A lot of people were were surprised when Gallagher got a phone hearing this morning, but 5 games USA lot more than people were expecting.

At the very least if nothing else, the Department of Player Safety has sent a message to the league that even a first time offender will face significant punishments for hits of this nature.
