Last night when the New York Islanders faced off the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal forward Brendan Gallagher got kicked out of the game for a rather dangerous elbow on Islanders defender Adam Pelech.
Earlier today, the NHL's Department of Player Safety announced Gallagher would have a hearing for the hit. Now Gallagher's punishment is known; take a look.
Gallagher has been suspended for the maximum 5 games for a phone hearing and will have to forgo a significant amount of his salary as a result of an illegal check to the head.
A lot of people were were surprised when Gallagher got a phone hearing this morning, but 5 games USA lot more than people were expecting.
At the very least if nothing else, the Department of Player Safety has sent a message to the league that even a first time offender will face significant punishments for hits of this nature.
