The most recent instance occurred in an ECHL game featuring the Fort Wayne Komets and Rapid City Rush in Fort Wayne, Indiana at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
Late in the third period with the Komets leading 5-3, the Rush pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. Rapid City dumped the puck deep in the Komets zone, goaltender Ryan Fanti picked it up behind his net and proceeded to wrist it the length of the ice scoring a goal at 1:42 of the final frame.
Fanti and his teammates celebrated on the ice before the goaltender skates to his bench skating down the line to high-five the rest of his teammates. As his name is called by the public address announcer, he is seen pumping both his arms in jubilation.
The goal was the first goal scored by a goalie in Fort Wayne's seventy-one-year history and certainly, put Fanti into legend status.
Before playing professionally, the twenty-three-year-old Thunder Bay, ON native played two years at the University of Minnesota-Duluth where he went 32-19-6 in fifty-seven games played.
