In recent years, the shine of the NHL's outdoor games has worn off. The outdoor games, now repeated year after year, can sometimes feel like a gimmick, but there's still times that remind us how great the spectacle of outdoor hockey is. What better way to do that than to top off a game with a classic heavyweight fight?
With the game likely out of reach late on the second period, Anthony Mantha decided to give his team a spark on the biggest stage.
Mantha grabbed Hurricanes' forward Jordan Martinook as his dance partner and proceeded to absolutely feed him his lunch. Martinook struggled to gets his gloves off early on, while Mantha was relentless in delivering right hooks.
The Capitals took their piece of blood in what ended up being a 4-1 loss outdoors in Raleigh, North Carolina. The outdoor game, despite being horribly marketed by the league, actually proved to be a wild success by all fan accounts. Hurricanes fans have a reputation for being a little crazy, hence the name of Caniacs, and they lived up to the reputation in their first home outdoor game. The presentation was amazing, the game was fantastic, and the Caniacs were out in full force, even tailgating before the game in the parking lot.
