It seems like the chickens have finally come home to roost for Hockey Canada as it's majour sponsors are starting to pull their funding. After Tuesday's hearings in front of the Canadian Parliament where board members from Hockey Canada stated that they don't believe anyone from the leadership team will be let go, there has been a majour backlash.
First, Tim Hortons, Canada's largest fast food chain announced that they will be pulling support for all men's hockey programming for this season. This includes the upcoming World Junior Championship in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
«We've communicated to Hockey Canada on many occasions that the organization needs to take strong and definitive action before it can regain the faith and trust of Canadians,» Michael Oliveira, Tim Hortons director of communications, wrote in a statement. «We're deeply disappointed in the lack of progress that Hockey Canada has made to date.»
Then one of Canada's largest banks and one of hockey's biggest sponsors, Scotiabank, announced they will also be pausing support for men's hockey programs, as well as the World Juniors.
«In our open letter in June, we publicly called on Hockey Canada to hold the game to a higher standard and we are disappointed with the lack of progress to date,» reads Scotiabank's statement to Sportsnet. «From Hockey Canada, we expect a tangible commitment to transparency with Canadians, strong leadership, accountability with their stakeholders and the hockey community, and improved safety both on and off the ice.
Ultimately our position hasn't wavered: the time for change is long overdue.»
People always say money talks and if majour sponsors are no longer giving Hockey Canada millions of dollars for their mens programs then that should send a clear message. The pressure is really on for change now.
