The 26 year old Czech forward has shown promise, albeit in limited games played, and has the pedigree of being a former first round pick. Just last year with the Wings, Vrana scored 13 goals in 26 games. His career best season came just two years ago, where he scored 25 goals and 52 points in just 69 games.
He's shown incredible talent in his short career, but it's recently been interrupted by his participation in the NHLPA's Player Assistance Program. After a handful of recent games in the AHL however, Vrana is ready to return to the NHL. Chris Johnston explained the decision on Insider Trading last night.
Evidently, the Red Wings must value Fabbri and Bertuzzi higher than Vrana at the moment. Vrana is owed $5.25 for the next two seasons however, and the contract could also factor into this decision.
It'll be interesting to see who, if anyone, claims Vrana tomorrow. Surely, some teams lower in the standings could stomach the cap room to potentially acquire a high-ceiling player for free, but NHL General Managers seem to always avoid acquiring big contracts on waivers. If Vrana does pass through waivers, he would be eligible to get more games in with Detroit's AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffiths.
