Insider reveals how close Jonathan Toews came to asking for a trade
Jonathan Toews has been pondering what his future might be with the Chicago Blackhawks. Although no trades are in the works now, you can't blame Toews for exploring his options. Toews resume with the Blackhawks is outstanding. It is the only franchise he has played for, he has played more than one thousand games for the organization, he has had twelve consecutive twenty goal seasons, and he has led the organization to three Stanley Cups.
The Chicago Blackhawks have made a debatable trade by trading away Alex DeBrincat and the organization looks like they are ready for a rebuild. The question is, does Toews want to be apart of that rebuild ? He has certainly earned the right to look elsewhere should he choose to do so. Toews has a no move clause in his contract so he is in control of where he goes if he does get traded. He is also an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2023 season. You would have to imagine that many other NHL teams would love to have Toews on their roster. This also give the Blackhawks an opportunity to get some assets for a franchise that is in rebuilding mode.
Although Toews has talked to people that are close to him, including his agent, it does not appear that he is on the move right now. It looks like he'll start the season in Chicago. It appears the Blackhawks will not be competitive this year, so maybe this will change Toews' mind quickly. If not, it's likely he gets moved by this years trade deadline.
Maybe if Toews feels the Hawks are headed in the right direction he can play a similar role to what was played by some of the veterans when he broke into the league. Having JT guide the future Blackhawks could be an invaluable partnership.
