John Tortorella shares how he really feels about analytics and advanced stats
After an abysmal season last year it appears the Philadelphia Flyers have turned a corner under new Head Coach, John Tortorella. The Flyers are currently 5-2-0 in their first 7 games of the season. When asked about that changed Tortorella decided to give reporters some insight into how he views the game and advanced stats.
"I think most analytics are trash," John Tortorella said. "I believe in the eye test and the stomach."
Said there are a few analytics he uses, but his relationship with analytics are a conversation for another time.
In the era of Moneyball and analytics, John Tortorella like many NHL coaches refuses to adapt or even consider modern approaches to running an organization.
That being said, not every team is the Oakland A's or Chicago Cubs, who came from behind using "Moneyball".
This is a perfect analogy for the calcification of NHL culture, as the style of thought Tortorella operates in goes by the wayside, Kyle Dubas builds a team analytically and the Toronto Maple Leafs set a record in team points in 2021-2022.
The Flyers are 5-2-0 and 1st in the Metropolitan Division, usually considered one of the toughest division in the NHL, so I can't fault his successes and his ability to turn the Columbus Blue Jackets from losers to consistent playoff appearances in his time there, but his teams were never good for a high offensive output.
