Jon Quick falls to the ice after Matthew Tkachuk's stick hits him in the eye
During last year's Stanley Cup Playoffs, then Colorado Avalanche goaltender Darcy Kuemper was nearly blinded by a high stick from the Nashville Predators' Ryan Johansson. Johansson's stick managed to penetrate directly through the cat-eye of Kuemper's mask. The injury caused Kuemper to miss some time, but he'd eventually return for the Cup Finals.
Last night during a game between the Los Angeles Kings and Florida Panthers, a similar situation occured. The play happened with less than a minute left in regulation and the Panthers trailing 5-4. As a shot comes through traffic towards the net Jonathan Quick is able to make the glove save.
After making the save though Quick falls to the ice clutching his eye. Quick then removes his mask, and can be seen favouring his eye. On the play no one appeared to see what happened, but on review it appears Tkachuk's stick catches Quick in the eye.
The referees would come together for a conference to discuss the play, but no penalty would be given. After speaking to a trainer Quick would remain in the game and hold on for a 5-4 victory. Some fans did feel like Quick was embellishing to try and get his team and their best defenders a rest.
