Kyle Dubas placed under review for potential conflict of interest
When the Toronto Maple Leafs relieved, Kyle Dubas of his general manager duties, many expected that to be the end of this saga. Unfortunately that hasn't been the case. Dubas has since been seen in Pittsburgh and has reportedly interviewed for the vacant general manager job with the penguins.
Today however, news broke that the National Hockey League players association has opened an investigation and review into Kyle Dubas and his player agent. This review has raised concerns due to Dubas being represented by the same agency that represents star player Auston Matthews.
Under NHL bylaws, no player agent may represent both managers and players. But there is no clear indication if this applies to partners under the same agency umbrella. Frank, Sarah Valley of the daily face-off broke this story this morning.
One agent who spoke to him under the conditions of anonymity shared the following.
"This is clearly prohibited under the regulations," one long-ti
agent said on Thursday, requesting anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on behalf of his firm. "It is an unwritten, understood and longstanding practice that your guy down the hall doesn't work for the other side. I'd like the NHLPA to launch an investigation and draw their own conclusion."
It will be interesting to see how this is ruled as this could definitely play a role in upcoming contract negotiations. This is a developing story and more information will be made available as it becomes available.
