One of those general managers is Toronto's Brad Treliving who has been working the phones hard in his first offseason with the Maple Leafs. Treliving is trying to get 40 goal man William Nylander locked down to a long-term contract extension but talks haven't gone exactly smooth. Treliving has had numerous discussions with Nylander's agent Lewis Gross and things appear to be at a standstill.
It has been widely reported that Nylander's camp is looking at a $10 million annual cap hit while the Leafs are looking for that number to be in the $8+ million range. There is speculation that Nylander is not willing to take less knowing his counterparts on the team ahead of him, Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner will not be doing the same.
The Hockey News David Alter reports a similar sentiment
Nylander and his camp have proven to be patient. A deal wasn't reached until the final hour before the deadline for RFA players to be signed to a contract or they become ineligible to play in the NHL for the season. They agreed on a six year, $45 million contract.
Coming off a career year with 40 goals and 87 points the 27 year old is in a prime position to earn a very lucrative contract when his deal expires after next season.
