Two weeks ago, the Corey Perry contract termination story took the hockey world by storm. As the misinformation flowed, the Chicago Blackhawks quietly made the decision to terminate Perry's deal. The entire situation was kept under lock and key, with very few details emerging.

Since the termination Perry has remained quiet, while reportedly speaking to some teams about a potential return. Last week, Gary Bettman mentioned during an interview that he was unsure if Perry would be allowed to return this season and he'd be required to review the evidence before any decision was made on the matter.

Today Elliotte Friedman, addressed the matter during his weekly written 32 Thoughts article. According to Friedman, new head of the NHLPA Marty Walsh and the association are hoping to grieve the termination of Perry's deal. However, Friedman states it's unclear at this time if Perry himself wants to challenge the termination.

I've written before that the NHLPA did not contest Patrik Berglund's contract termination from Buffalo in 2018 because the player wanted no part of it. Don't know what Corey Perry's decision will be, but there definitely is a push for the union to grieve even if Perry declines. I don't know exact details and have no desire to minimize anything, but there are strong feelings the NHLPA cannot allow this precedent.

At this time Perry owes the Blackhawks approximately $1,000,000 from the amount he was currently paid out. If Perry fails to file a grievance he will be required to pay back this sum to the Hawks. While Perry is currently unsure of what he may do, what is confirmed is that if he does grieve the contract, the details of the claims against him will certainly surface.
