Nino Niederreiter was suspended after slashing a player on the Washington Capitals' bench during Friday nights game.
The Department of Player Safety acted quickly and handed Niederreiter a one-game suspension for his actions. He had to sit out Sunday's game against the New York Rangers and forfeit one game's salary. However, due to the quick turnaround Niederreiter wasn't able to appeal the suspension before the game against the Rangers.
According to Elliott's Friedman of Sportsnet, Niederreiter is appealing the one game suspension and may be entitled to compensation.
It's completely lost in everything else today, but CAR's Nino Niederreiter is appealing his one-game suspension for slashing. He has already missed the game, but could, in theory, be re-imbursed. Appeal would be heard by Commissioner Bettman.
Nino Niederreiter wouldn't be able to play the game he missed, but he could at least be re-imbursed for the fine he had to pay. Commissioner Gary Bettman would have to overturn the decision though.
This appeal means far more than a single game salary. Players across the league have been clamouring for consistency through NHL Player Safety and this appeal is a direct shot at George Parros and his entire NHL Player Safety Department.
