In fact, according to TSN's Darren Dreger, Tortorella wasn't brought in to assist in the re-build at all, but rather, to help a contending team hopefully take that next step. Dreger goes on to say that he expects Fletcher to "swing for the fences" this off-season while trying to bring in game-breaking players.
Honestly, this sounds like more of an indictment on Fletcher and the Flyers organization than that of Torts. They knew going in Tortorella was not going to be a good fit if he was tasked with trying to help the team re-build, but rather than lay out a plan for him that sees the Flyers contend in year two or three of his contract, It just sounds like Fletcher has decided to mortgage the future in order to have a chance at contending next season and in the near future beyond that.
You get a coach that's a good fit for your organization and their goals as a whole, not a coach who you know won't really try if the team he's coaching isn't instantly competitive.
This sounds like a disaster waiting to happen for the Flyers organization, ownership and fans alike. For their sake and everyone involved, i hope this turns out better than it looks.
