Rangers fan who sucker punched Lightning fan appears in court, claims he's the victim
After Game 5, James Anastasio, a New York Rangers fan was captured on video sucker punching a Tampa Bay Lightning fan. The punch led to a good samaritan following the assailant in an attempt to stop him. Unfortunately Anastasio, who was trying to avoid capture, punched the good samaritan in the face before being apprehended.
Yesterday Anastasio appeared in court with his lawyer to try and plead his case.
Mr. Anastasio repeatedly tried to defuse and de-escalate the situation, one where he was immensely outnumbered and ultimately threatened by a group of highly intoxicated individuals.
While he is anxious for the rest of his story to be revealed, he also trusts and respects the court process. We are confident that James will be vindicated once all the facts come to light.
While this argument appears to be a bit off, Anastasio is entitled to his day in court. But hopefully next time he can appear without the same red shirt he committed the assault in.
Anastasio has been charged with two counts of assault and two counts of harassment.
