A recent announcement by NHL Insider Darren Dreger indicated that teams involved with the WJC 2018 players on their roster would be given preferential treatment.
The Philadelphia Flyers, New Jersey Devils and Calgary Flames have been informed they will receive cap relief for the players on Leave charged in the 2018 World Junior criminal proceedings. Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) February 5, 2024
This time, the NHL has decided to give a break to the Philadelphia Flyers, New Jersey Devils, and Calgary Flames.
It was likely a break they didn't need, as Carter Hart, Michael McLeod, Cal Foote, and Dillon Dube have all been named and charged.
As a result of being put on leave during the investigation, and as the fallout from the charges continues to pile up, the teams will receive salary cap relief.
Gary Bettman gave salary cap relief to these teams for what reason?
In the end, it seems unfair to other teams in the NHL, who have never had players engage in nonconsensual behavior or have been charged for it.
Does the union contract contain any clauses? Is this a new rule?
Doesn't seem fair.
