Before the deadline it was reported that the Arizona Coyotes were aggressively shopping star defenceman, Jakob Chychrun. Chychrun can play both the right and left side, and can also contribute offensively from the backend. The Coyotes are in a full rebuild and look to be selling anything that isn't nailed to the floor. Jakob Chychrun is also on a very friendly team contract with a cap hit of only $4.6 million and it extends to the end of the 2024-25 season.

So why didn't they trade him?

At this trade deadline, it seemed like defenceman were at a premium and that might be why Chychrun wasn't moved. Because the prices being paid for other defenceman, drove up the price for the Coyotes.

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reported that the price the Florida Panthers paid for Ben Chariot may have driven up the price for Chychrun. The Montreal Canadiens received a 1st round pick, a 4th round pick and a prospect for a rental player. This made the Arizona Coyotes think they could've gotten more.

TSN's Darren Dreger added that upon seeing prices the Coyotes upped their asking price which drove down the market for Chychrun.

The #Yotes ask for D-Jakob Chychrun has changed, they now want two, maybe three 1st RD picks and a prospect.

Prior they were asking for a 1st RD pick, either a top 6 F or top 4 D and two prospects. - Darren Dreger

Jakob Chychrun is an elite defensemen with multiple years left on his contract. The Coyotes asking for two or three 1st round picks shouldn't be a surprise compared to some of the trades made on Monday. I think if he is to be moved it will be during the off-season when other teams have more wiggle room.
