Vegas Golden Knights forward to face likely suspension after the season's first illegal check to the head
Hockey is a competitive and physical sport, but every once and awhile a player crosses the line and finds himself facing consequences. Last night was the NHL's opening night of the season and it saw the Vegas Golden Knights raise their Stanley Cup banner. Luckily for Brett Howden he was able to be part of the ceremony, because it's very lucky the forward will be sitting for at least a couple games.
With emotions running high in the 3rd period Howden elected to throw a blindside hit to the head of Kraken forward Brandon Tanev. The hit left Tanev shaken and sent that popular forward to the ice in obvious discomfort.
The referees immediately reviewed the hit and determined this play was worthy of a match penalty. On the play the primary point of contact is the head, but to make things worse Tanev never touches the puck before the hit is made. Tanev left the game and did not return.
On the play Tanev also appears to land awkwardly on his leg. Hopefully Tanev doesn't miss much time, but it's likely Howden will receive the first suspension of the season.
