The Washington Capitals aren't where people thought they would be this year, sitting 6th in the metropolitan division, however it looks as if they've locked up a piece of their defensive core.

According to Puck Report and the Washington Capitals Twitter, they've re-signed defender Trevor van Riemsdyk to a 3 year contract extension, take a look:

The contract is 9 million over those 3 years and will see van Riemsdyk earn 3M AAV over the courses of his deal. He was slated to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season

van Riemsdyk, 31, has skated in 66 games for the capitals this season, collecting 7 goals and 12 assists for a total of 19 points while being a stabilizing prescience on the back end.

Having a veteran like van Riemsdyk around the team will help the team out as they start to get younger.
