Wayne Gretzky had this to say as Alex Ovechkin nears his goal scoring record
The Washington Capitals are have done tremendous things during the career of Alex Ovechkin, in no small part due to his goal scoring ability. He's been their superstar for almost two decades, heck one could even argue he is the identity of the Capitals themselves
As he continues his March toward the all-time scoring record, Wayne Gretzky appears to be his number one fan, take a look:
"Wayne knows that Alex is legit. They have a friendship now," he said at the NHL Board meeting.
With Ovechkin getting closer to the record day by day, Gretzky let the current Washington Capitals owner, Ted Leonsis know he'll be following Ovechkin at the home and on the road, to witness the Ovie breaking his all-time goal leader record.
Gretzky and Ovechkin have built a friendship out of mutual respect for each other's skill and it shows, as Gretzky continues to offer his support as Ovi will eventually break the all-time goals record.
Just as Howe had passed the torch along to Gretzky on October 15th, 1989 I expect we will soon see the torch passed once again, between two great friends, and hockey will again be better for it.
