Last July, Galchenyuk was arrested in Arizona on multiple charges including "private property hit and run, disorderly conduct, failure to obey, resisting arrest and threatening or intimidating." This came just days after he signed a contract with the Arizona Coyotes for the 2023-24 season, but ultimately, they decided to terminate the deal, making him a free agent.
A month later, he signed a two-year contract with SKA Saint Petersburg and the first season of the contract wasn't that bad for Galchenyuk. In 61 regular season games, he put up 42 points (16 goals, 26 assists), 24 penalty minutes and was a plus-13. He went on to put up five points in nine playoff games.
With KHL free agency opening up in the last couple of weeks, SKA Saint Petersburg have been figuring out ways to improve their roster for the 2024-25 season. As a result, the team, along with Alex Galchenyuk, decided to part ways and mutually agreed to a contract termination, despite him having a good campaign with them.
In a post on social media, SKA Saint Petersburg announced his departure and thanked him for his efforts throughout the 2023-24 season.
It didn't take Galchenyuk too long to find a new home, as he's agreed to terms on a one-year contract for the 2024-25 season with Amur Khabarovsk worth 88 million rubles, which works out to roughly $967,000 USD.
It'll be interesting to see how Galchenyuk's season goes and if he is able to earn a bigger contract with term and more money next summer once he becomes an unrestricted free agent in the KHL. There's no doubt his skills are still there, but at this time, because of legal issues, a return to North America seems out of the question in the coming years.
