Flash forward a few weeks and we now have a lot more information about this new professional league that will be starting play in cities across Canada and the United States this Fall.
In a post on X on Thursday night, agent Darryl Wolski, who works for 2112 Hockey Agency shared a link to the official website for this new league which will be called - Major League Hockey.
On Major League Hockey's website, they shared a ton of details including a very high salary cap for a brand new league, where the teams will be located (no cities named yet), their format, roster sizes and more.
For starters, this league will be a 3-on-3 format with teams playing two 24-minute games each night, with games taking place on Friday and Saturdays and be affordable for fans to attend.
Major League Hockey will have 16 teams across North America. In Canada, they will have teams in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Quebec. Meanwhile in the United States, teams will be placed in Arizona, New York, California, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New England, Oklahoma, Texas and Florida. Each of the 16 franchises will have a salary cap of $30 MILLION, with $100,000 being awarded to a team for each win.
As for the players that will be involved in this league, Major League Hockey says that their rosters will be filled with NCAA and U Sports players, as well as those who play in junior leagues in Canada, the United States and Europe. They also mentioned that each team is allow three "World Class" players who are free agents in North America, Europe or Russia and have major professional experience. Major League Hockey added that qualified female players will also be considered.
Each team will consist of 14 players, with 12 skaters and two goaltenders making up the roster. Major League Hockey also confirmed on their website that their scouting staff have already completed the 2024 Player Draft and results of that will be released shortly.
There are still a lot of questions to be answered regarding this new professional league and many are wondering where this funding is coming from, especially considering that $480 million will be spent on player salaries per season. More details are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
