Two years after breaking his opponent's jaw with a stick to the face, a young hockey player has been sentenced in court for the attack

The pictures tell a pretty gruesome story. Two years after a brutal attack during a junior hockey tournament in Sweden left 19-year-old Kid Andersson with several fractures to his jaw, his attacker has been officially sentenced by the court.
It was in January of 2022 that the attack happened. Andersson was sitting on his team's bench and admits he splashed his attacker with water from a water bottle. The attacker, who was lining up for a faceoff, turned around and delivered a hard blow with his stick to Andersson's face, sennding him to hospital for weeks, unable to eat any solid foods, and missing several teeth.
The unnamed attacker was initially acquitted if assault, but was ordered to pay money towards Andersson's medical bills. However, that sentence was appealed, and a new verdict was issued Monday.
"The Svea Court of Appeal sentences the player for assault and the penalty is a suspended sentence with 140 hours of community service.

The convicted player must also pay damages of SEK 92,498 to Kid Andersson."

The money amounts to just under $9000 USD. In an interview days after the incident, Andersson said he had little recollection of what actually happened, and remembers just waking up in an ambulance on the way to the hospital.
"There are several of you who usually claim that courts should not interfere in what happens in the rink, that hockey should be allowed to hand out its own punishments. I have never agreed. Of course there is a limit. Sometimes passed."

During the original sentencing, the lawyer for the defendant said his client had no issue with the monetary settlement, but did not believe he should be found guilty of assault. The appeal court clearly disagreed.
