NHL team officially buys popular website Cap Friendly, will shut it down
The Washington Capitals have officially purchased the popular website Cap Friendly and the NHL team plans to shut it down.
The popular hockey website Cap Friendly has been a staple in the hockey community for years. The gold standard for both salary related inquiries as well as NHL transactions has officially been sold. The news broke earlier this afternoon and came as a shock to many fans who rely on the website.
Elliotte Friedman broke the news on his X account that the Washington Capitals had officially purchased the website. While the organization agreed to allow this sale to process on July 5th, the deal is all but official. The delayed sale will allow the website to cover both the draft and the beginning of free agency.
It won't happen until July, but according to multiple sources, the Washington Capitals have reached an agreement to purchase the outstanding CapFriendly website.
These same sources stressed that both the Capitals and CapFriendly wanted the site to be publicly available and independently operated through the 2024 NHL Draft and the start of free agency, so it is not expected the sale will be official until at least July 5.
The website formed in 2015 when the predecessor CapGeek officially shutdown. All NHL teams who had agreements in place to utilize the website and its technology have been informed they will have their deals terminated. According to Friedman on the date of the sale, the website will officially go dark.
You can definitely see why a team would want this infrastructure. After the transaction officially closes, the website will go dark
At that point hockey fans will be forced to seek out alternative options for all of their salary cap information.
