With NHL training camps getting underway in a few days, several players have signed professional tryouts (PTOs) across the NHL, including some veteran names

September is here, and as fall gets ready to set in in many areas, NHL training camps are set to get underway with it. Most will open around September 20th, and with training camps come professional tryouts, or PTOs, for several players. Wednesday provided a flurry of them, with some familiar and well-known names among them.

29 year old Madison Bowey has signed on for the New York Rangers training camp, hoping to get a contract for the 2024-25 season. The defenceman played with three different teams in the KHL last season. Bowey's last games in the NHL came in 2021-22 with the Canucks.

The Anaheim Ducks filled three training camp spots with PTOs for Mark Pysyk, Boris Katchouk, and Gustav Lindstrom. Pysyk spent last season in the AHL with two different teams. His last NHL games with the Buffalo Sabres in 2021-22. Katchouk, a scrappy forward, was with the Ottawa Senators when last season ended after being picked up off waivers from the Chicago Blackhawks. Lindstrom played with Anaheim last season, but is currently a free agent. The 25 year old has 176 games of NHL experience.

Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, who played last season with the Seattle Kraken, has been invited to training camp by the Colorado Avalanche. At 29 years of age, Bellemare is likely looking at his last chance to remain an NHL player, after playing 700 games in the league. He's played for the Colorado Avalanche before.

I'm not sure anyone expected him to need a PTO at this point in his career, but former Edmonton Oilers first round draft pick Kailer Yamamoto has signed a PTO with Utah HC. Yamamoto, taken 22nd overall by the Oilers in 2017, spent 2023-24 with the Seattle Kraken, netting 8 goals and 16 points in 59 games.

Forward Matt Luff got himself a PTO with the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. Luff, 27, has spent the vast majority of his career in the AHL.

Former Toronto Maple Leaf Travis Dermott will attend training camp with the Edmonton Oilers. Meanwhile, the Leafs have signed Mac Pacioretty for training camp. This one seem to be more of a formality as Pacioretty and the Leafs are expected to sign a full-fledged contract before the new seasons gets underway.
