Auston Matthews is on the verge of something special, becoming the Toronto Maple Leafs all time leading scorer. He is just 52 goals away from passing Leafs great Mats Sundin. Something that he can easily do this year, coming off a 69 goal campaign. If Matthews were the break Sundin's goal record, would the big Swede welcome passing the torch and be in attendance for the special occasion? It certainly appears that way
According to an interview done with Sportsnet Sundin addressed when Matthews would break his record, not if, noting not only how special Matthews as a player is, but how special the Leafs team is and the talent in the team.
One thing is irrefutable Austin Matthews is a generational score that does not come along very often and for Sundin to heap praise on to him the way he is is something special.
Whether it's the season or next Matthews is going to pass Sundins
record, and when it happens, he will do so just before what is typically the halfway mark of his career, which is nothing short of remarkable, his prolific scoring and the ability to find open space is the reason Matthew is the player that he is.
Sundin spent 13 years in Toronto, Matthews on the verge of setting the goal record in half the time is something nobody could have predicted.
With that being said, the Toronto Maple Leafs in their fans should be very grateful that Matthews is at this point in time wants to spend the rest of his career in the blue and white. They've had a lot of great players in their history and Matthews is by far the greatest. Setting the goal scoring record, would only further prove that.
