Utah's NHL franchise announces finalists for team name
Utah's National Hockey League franchise is set to begin play next season at Delta Center in Salt Lake City after moving from Arizona in April.
After the move from Arizona to Utah was announced, there were reports that the organization may not have a team name for their inaugural season, however in recent weeks, that tone has changed quite a bit.
As of April 24th, Utah trademarked nine different team names including Yetis, Blizzard, Outlaws, among others.
On Wednesday, the Utah organization made a big step towards deciding the franchise's identity, announcing 20 choices as the finalists for their team name.
For the inaugural season, the new team in Salt Lake City will only wear "UTAH" across its sweater.
Here are the 20 potential nicknames under consideration for the future via a fan vote.
With big decisions coming regarding their roster over the summer, it's going to be interesting to see what General Manager Bill Armstrong does. There have been reports that team owner Ryan Smith wants them to be competitive in free agency on July 1st and there are quite a few players who had strong 2023-24 seasons Utah could target starting on Canada Day.
Utah also holds the sixth overall selection in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft and are poised to pick a solid player with potential options including Anton Silayev, Sam Dickinson, Berkly Catton, Zeev Buium and Cole Eiserman.
