Carter Hart reportedly on the trading block as Flyers rebuild begins
The Philadelphia Flyers' firing of GM Chuck Fletcher last Friday was the beginning of the significant changes that will be happening with this organization through the coming months.
On Monday, National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman shared his thoughts on the developing situation in Philadelphia and it was during those discussions that he dropped a bombshell regarding Flyers goaltender Carter Hart. Friedman indicated that he believes Hart will be available.
"I think you're bang on with Carter Hart," said Friedman of the Flyers netminder on the 32 Thoughts podcast. "You talked about him on Saturday night and I think he's going to be available."
As the Flyers move towards what looks to be a complete tear down and/or rebuild of their current roster, it sounds very much like Hart is not expected to be a part of the process. This is what Friedman's co-host on the podcast had to say about Hart on Saturday night:
"We're really starting to wonder about Carter Hart," said Jeff Marek on Saturday night, "The presence and emergence of Samuel Ersson the netminder of Lehigh Valley has really given the Philadelphia Flyers some options here." The play of the 23 year old Swedish native has left a positive impression on management and has made them think of the possibility of moving the longtime starter.
"What would they for Carter Hart on the open market?" asked Marek. "We suspect a lot. And does Carter Hart want to spend what would probably be the best years of his career in a rebuild? Something very much to watch there."
Drafted 48th overall in 2016, Hart as a year remaining on his contract with an average annual value of $3.9 million. He has appeared in 194 regular season games, with a 2.97 goals against average and a .905 save percentage.
New Interim GM Daniel Briere told reporters his club needs a multi-year rebuild and Hart could be the first big name to be shipped out to start collecting those assets.
