At the Trade Deadline, the Edmonton Oilers heavily explorer a deal to acquire San Jose Sharks' defender Erik Karlsson. The two teams grew deep in discussions, but ultimately the teams decided to table any additional talks for the offseason. After being unable to agree on salary retention the two teams parted ways.

The Oilers opted to acquire Mattias Ekholm instead, so there is little certainty they'll be in the market for defensemen again this summer. However, if the Oilers do circle back on Karlsson, Eric Duhatschek of The Athletic believes that Jack Campbell will be part of the deal.

I wonder if the solution doesn't revolve around the Oilers' underachieving but occasionally exciting Jack Campbell...

Why not San Jose? The Sharks' goaltending hasn't been great this year, and James Reimer is 34, and unrestricted following this season. Kaapo Kahkonen had a decent February, followed by a mediocre March, but he is signed for another year at $2.75 million and could work as a 1B.

The Sharks would be able to absorb all of Campbell's contract and give him a chance at getting his career back on track in a relatively stress-free atmosphere of a clearly rebuilding team.

It is any interesting thought, but the incentive for the Sharks would have to be through the roof to take on Campbell's contract. Since his very impressive start last season with the Maple Leafs Campbell has barely been an NHL level goaltender.

Would the Sharks be willing to commit themselves to 4 additional years of Jack Campbell? Could they rehab the goaltenders value or is this simply a writer being hopeful someone will take on the Oilers problem?
