When Patrick Kane signed with the Detroit Red Wings the team had a record of 11-6-3. Since that time the Red Wings have gone a disappointing 8-10-1 and have fallen out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. At the time the Red Wings sat 5th in the Conference, and have since fell to 12th, far from the results Kane was hoping for.
At the time of his decision Kane has prioritized the opportunity to win a Stanley Cup, something that doesn't appear to be a possibility in Detroit this season. Despite the team performing poorly Kane has been rather productive. In 15 games this season Kane has 14 points including 6 goals.
Due to Kane's aspirations there was an expectation that the 35-year-old could request that General Manager Steve Yzerman look to move him to a playoff team. With Kane's contract being without any trade protection the Red Wings could move him to any team interested in his services, a freedom the Blackhawks didn't have last season when they dealt the superstar.
However, the trade speculation surrounding Kane appears to have been premature. According to David Pagnotta at the time of signing Kane actually wanted a multi-year deal and appears committed to the Red Wings.
It will certainly be disappointing to Kane if he wastes a year missing the playoffs. At 35 Kane has fewer and fewer attempts at winning another Stanley Cup. It will be interesting to see which direction the Wings go if they miss the playoffs for an 8th straight season.
