If you aren't up to date with what's been going on, during last week's episode, Paul Bissonnette revealed that he was told Babcock was asking to look through players phones in Columbus this summer after getting hired. Following an investigation by the NHL and NHLPA, Babcock decided to step down, thus ending his very brief tenure in Columbus without even coaching a game.
During Tuesday's Spittin' Chiclets episode, Ryan Whitney shared a story from a player with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, which is what they were known as when Babcock was behind the bench.
An older player on the Ducks was sitting on the bench ahead of the team's final preseason game, taping his stick, when Mike Babcock came up to him and said "this is pretty amazing isn't it?".
The story took a pretty odd turn. After the unnamed player agreed, Babcock reportedly responded by saying, "soak it in, it's the last time you'll ever be on an NHL bench."
To say that to a player ahead of a preseason game is a bit ridiculous. Even if the unnamed player wasn't performing well and was likely AHL-bound, there was definitely a better way Babcock could have gone about it.
Babcock didn't last too long with Anaheim, which was his first NHL head coaching job, spending two seasons with the club before moving on to Detroit, followed by the Toronto Maple Leafs.
It's safe to say that Mike Babcock won't be coaching in the National Hockey League anymore and that he's going to have a tough time trying to find a new head coaching gig anywhere else.
