Though hits and fights have been a part of ice hockey for decades, safety concerns have risen and so has the league's response thereto.
Most prominently, following his dangerous move against Dallas Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen, repeat offender for the New York Rangers Matt Rempe was suspended eight games which resulted in an $80,000 salary loss.
Now, one Bruins forward trying to make a name for himself on his new team has become the latest ejection for risky hits near the glass.
During Boston's home game against the Capitals on Monday, 24-year-old forward Oliver Wahlstrom tried to reach around Washington defenseman Martin Fehervary to gain control of the puck.
Unsuccessful, Wahlstom decided to shove Fehervary forward, launching him into the boards in an awkward position leading with his upper body.
The game officials assessed Wahlstrom a major penalty and game misconduct for this shove, causing his ejection just ten seconds into the third period.
The former first-round pick was recently claimed by Boston off waivers from the New York Islanders, making his appearance on Monday his third game with the team.
Though the Bruins took the game 1-4, the 24-year-old forward has yet to record any goals or assists for Boston, which is much harder to do from off the ice.
Whether or not he receives additional discipline for his hit, hopefully, he has learned to avoid taking it too far.
