As the next hockey season is about to begin, it can be a humbling experience for those players unable to find work. Eventually being without a contract for many often signals the end of a player's career. Today that is the case for veteran defenceman Derek Joslin. Joslin announce he is calling time on his professional hockey career at the age of 36.

A fifth round pick of the San Jose Sharks in 2005, Joslin filled the role of a depth defender for a period in the NHL from the 2008-09 season until playing his final two games in the league during the 2012-13 season. His most games played in a single NHL season was 44, reaching this feat during the 2011-12 season with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Joslin has been applying his craft in Europe since the 2013-14 season. He has played the last four seasons in the top league in Austria spending two with VSV EC and two with Salzburg EC.

Joslin has played 116 NHL games in his career, suiting up for the San Jose Sharks, Carolina Hurricanes and Vancouver Canucks.

We wish Derek all the best in his next chapter of his life.
