The Anaheim Ducks are one of six teams in the National Hockey League without a captain heading into training camp, with the last player to don the 'C' being Ryan Getzlaf during the 2021-22 season. However, that is expected to change in the coming weeks.
During Friday's episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Anaheim Ducks will be naming veteran defenceman Radko Gudas their new captain before the 2024-25 season gets underway.
Radko Gudas being named Ducks captain is a bit surprising to say the least, although, he is a good leader for the team's young core and will wear the 'C' until one of those younger players is ready for that responsibility.
Gudas has two years remaining on his contract with the Ducks and at the end of that deal, someone like Mason McTavish, for example, could be ready for the role as Anaheim's captain. Other potential options for the Ducks' captaincy, if Gudas leaves after his final two years of his contract, include Troy Terry, Trevor Zegras and Ryan Strome.
The Ducks, who have missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs six seasons in a row, will open up their 2024-25 schedule on October 12th against the San Jose Sharks.
