Breaking News - Arizona Coyotes new arena deal in jeopardy as city files lawsuit
If there was ever an NHL Franchise more cursed than the Toronto Maple Leafs, it would have to be the Arizona Coyotes. Everything that possibly could go wrong for the Coyotes has. Less than a week ago a part owner of the Coyotes was arrested and charged with felony strangulation.
Now it appears the Coyotes new arena deal may further be in jeopardy. The franchise has been preparing for the upcoming referendum to vote on the arena space. But now that appears to be the least of their worries.
Today the City of Phoenix officially filed a lawsuit against the City of Tempe for the rezoning of the potential arena space.
The city of Phoenix is suing Tempe for development that includes the #Coyotes new arena.
The formal complaint in Maricopa County Superior Court has Phoenix, the owners and operators of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, suing Tempe for a breach of contract, "asking the court to rescind Tempe's recent zoning and land use changes and prohibit future residential uses in an area that the Federal Aviation Administration says is incompatible with residential development."
If this lawsuit goes forward it will further complicate the referendum and if the City of Phoenix is victorious it would likely mark the end of the franchise.
