For just the second time in his lengthy career, Milan Lucic will be an unrestricted free agent come July 1st. The 35-year-old is close to a reunion with his former team, according to one report.
Rick Dhaliwal is reporting that Lucic is close to signing with the Boston Bruins, the team he spent the first 8 years of his career with. Lucic became a Stanley Cup champion in Boston.
After being traded to LA and spending one season there, Lucic signed a seven year deal with the Edmonton Oilers for $6 million per season. It's a signing most Oilers fans would like to forget. After putting up 50 points in his first year in Edmonton, Lucic declined steadily, and was eventually traded to the Calgary Flames, where he would finish out the remainder of that contract. Last season, he had just seven goals and 19 points in 77 games.
While Lucic is nowhere near the offensive player he once was, he can still add grit and toughness to a team. While no terms of the deal with Boston have been released, it's likely to be around a $1 million cap hit and likely short term.
Update
The deal is done.
