Team USA is potentially in some trouble as they head into tomorrow night's Four Nations final against Team Canada.
The Americans handled Canada in the round robin, but things might look a lot different for both teams this time around, which could be trouble for the USA.
Many believed that the Americans would be getting a huge boost to the lineup as Quinn Hughes was expected to join the team, but this morning it was confirmed that Hughes would not play in the game.
As a result, the American club has been forced to look elsewhere for help as they battle injuries and illness at the end of the tournament.
Today, NHL insider Frank Seravalli revealed who will be joining the team in Hughes' absence.
Instead of the Canucks superstar, New Jersey Devils defenseman Brett Pesce will be joining the club, as well as Sabres center Tage Thompson.
Both players are on standby duty as they will only be eligible to join the team in case of emergency.
Seravalli confirmed that the same rules are in effect for Team USA as were for Team Canada when they called upon Thomas Harley when Shea Theodore and Cale Makar went down.
With all that being said, Brett Pesce is a very fine defender in his own right, but he is not Quinn Hughes.
The 30-year-old has just one goal and 11 points in 48 games this year while Hughes has 14 goals and 59 points.
There is simply no replacing that kind of offense for Team USA. Luckily for the Americans, they did not need Hughes to beat Canada in this tournament before, but the question remains, can they do it again when all the marbles are on the line?
